The Ripple Applique, designed by Mona Hussein, is a unique lighting unit that combines art, design, and functionality. Inspired by the mesmerizing patterns created by raindrops as they fall and merge with water, this applique recreates the sequence of circular forms in a visually captivating way.
What sets the Ripple Applique apart is its construction. Made from hammered and cut brass, copper, or metal rings, the layered structure mimics the ripple effect of water. The rings are carefully placed above one another, allowing light to disperse in an artistic and visually appealing manner.
The technology behind the Ripple Applique is mainly organic, preserving the randomness of the hammering and the lines of the circles. Each applique is handcrafted by master craftsmen in Egypt, using simple tools and produced in medium-sized workshops.
With a diameter of up to 60 cm, the Ripple Applique can be customized to have a minimum of two rings or an endless amount of rings. It can also be shaped as half or a quarter of the ripple. Additionally, the metal ripple can be sprayed with any color from electrostatic paints, offering endless possibilities for customization.
One of the standout features of the Ripple Applique is its versatility. It can be hung on either a ceiling or a wall, either individually or in clusters, allowing it to adapt to any space and style. The indirect dimming light it provides creates a warm, intimate, and harmonious atmosphere, making it a delightful addition to any room.
The Ripple Applique project began in 2008 in Egypt, specifically designed for the Italian restaurant at The Cove – Rotana Resort & Spa in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. Later in 2011, it was reintroduced in Mahally, a local showroom for furniture and accessories in Egypt, with different colors and diameters.
Recognized for its innovative design and practicality, the Ripple Applique received the Iron A' Design Award in 2014 in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Ripple Applique stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
With its captivating design and ability to transform any space into a work of art, the Ripple Applique by Mona Hussein is a testament to the beauty and creativity that can be achieved through the fusion of art, design, and technology.
